आज हम लोग जानने वाले हैं कि यदि किसी ठोस के तापमान को परिवर्तित कर दिया जाए अर्थात यदि ठोस को ठंडी अवस्था में रखा जाए एवं उसी ठोस को गर्म अवस्था में रखा जाए तो ठोस के अणुओं की गतिशीलता एवं उस ठोस के भौतिक गुणों में क्या परिवर्तन होता है ?

प्रस्तुत फोटो में नीले रंग के अणु यह प्रदर्शित कर रहे हैं कि जब वस्तु को ठोस को ठंडी अवस्था में रखा जाता है ठंडे तापमान पर रखा जाता है तो वस्तु के अणुओं की गतिशीलता एवं ठोस का व्यवहार संकुचित हो जाता है तथा ठोस अणुओं की गतिज ऊर्जा कम हो जाती है ।
ठीक उसी प्रकार जब ठोस को गर्म किया जाता है तो उसके अणुओं की गतिशीलता बढ़ जाती है उसकी गतिज ऊर्जा बढ़ जाती है एवं ठोस में प्रसार भी होता है ।
